Research

Images from my last trip to India

I last went to India in 2018 for my uncles wedding and when I was there I got to gather many photos that showed of Indian culture during a wedding and even fashion, I also got to take a look at some aesthetics.

Recipes for Potential Food at Exhibition

Aswell as having art in my exhibition I really want to include food so people can get a sense of taste whilst they are there so I can set a scene for them. Even though I am not 100% precent sure if I would come across doing this below are some of the recipes I would on TikTok.

For the cheesecake, the recipes linked would be the one I use however I would not present it in the same way as it the host in the video. This is because it would not be functional for people to carry a piece of cheese cake on a paper plate so to avoid this, I will be using mini square dessert cups so that people visiting can take a cup as they walk around.

Advertising an Exhibition

One element I have also had to investigate is how to advertise for an exhibition. This is another key element to look at for my research as I would want to get word across to as many people as I can. One of the most efficient ways that came up was to put up posters in a local area where people can see them (ArtQuest, N.D). Another way to advertise, is to send emails directly to people so that they know that the exhibition is going, this is tended to be an effective way to get people’s attention as people always check their emails every other day so it would make sure people see it. Other ways that are effective are write and send out a press release, list your exhibitions on newsletters and listing websites, send out an e-newsletter to participating artist contacts / mailing list and promote the show on social media.

Julian Opie

One additional artist I looked was Julian Opie as I was informed by his style of art and wanted to have a similar look but with an Indian aesthetic to it. One of the pieces I was drawn to were ‘Lyn with white silk blouses and diamond necklace’ the piece of art was made in 2016. Opie is a sculptor and digital artist associated with the New British Sculpture movement, and best known for portraits that reduce subjects to essential lines and colour planes (Artnet, N.D). At first sight of the artist’s work looks like pop art with how the characters in his work are displayed.

Within the art work you can see the subject I.e., the character Opie has drawn and then you start to get distracted by the background as he uses bright and vibrant colours, which leaves the viewer wondering about why has Opie chosen the bold colours rather than picking a warm, relaxing colour. The work is flat and in 2D there are few textures as all of it is smooth. I think one unusual feature throughout Opie’s works is the way he draws eyes, there either dot to represent them or he draws them out but not in detail just an outline of them. Opie has made his work over many mediums such as, steel, vinyl, LED, lenticular prints, inkjet, and digital print and many more (Lucy Howie, N.D). Julian Opie mostly uses controlled and geometric lines in his work to create portraits of people which are then printed. He uses a black outline to show set apart features of his subjects and then starts using block colours using minimal effort to blend the distinct colours into one another.

Analysing Exhibition Poster

Fonts and Typography

Whilst producing my advertising posters I knew I did not want a basic font for the title on the poster. I knew I wanted something that stood out and that related to my Indian culture exhibition. Whilst looking at some images on Google I noticed a lot of Indian writing has a line over it connecting the letters together for example নমস্কার (Hello in Bengali), નમસ્તે (Hello in Gujrati), नमस्ते (Hello in Hindi) and even ਸਤ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ (Hello in Punjabi). After looking at the fonts I knew that I wanted the line on top of the different letters but I still wanted the word to be in English after looking around I came across this image which had English letters in an Indian style and I knew this I what I wanted to use in my work.
